Animal Needs

The students are learning about animals in science. We got a letter from Dr. Zooby, an animal caretaker, who needed help taking care of some of his animals. He gave each group a type of animal and then the students had to tell him what the animal needed to live and grow. It was challenging trying to decide what were needs for each animal and what were wants of the animals. Dr. Zooby was very happy to see such great problem solvers in first grade.

A Visit from the Tree Lady

Bats!

This week we paired a nonfiction text and fiction text for a day about bats! We read our Scholastic News about bats after previewing and predicting. We made lots of connections to these furry creatures. After, we read Stellaluna and compared our texts. Then to end the day we made 'bats' using cookies and fruit roll-ups. We had a 'bat-tiful' day!

Celebrating Reading

We had a reading celebration with our parents and friends on Friday. We invited them to come in and see how our reading class works. We had refreshments, did a reading lesson and then we read, read, read. It was so exciting to see all the reading in our room. Thank you so much for enjoying our love of reading!

Math Explorations

Lots of fun math activities during center time! We practiced using rulers to measure objects, we estimated the length of objects, and we learned how to use the ruler to make straightedges. The students reviewed skip counting by twos and they explored dominoes. We learned that dominoes are more than just for fun, they can help us with counting, adding, and subtracting.

Identifying Things From Under The Sea

We were hard working scientists this week. We made very close observations of sea shells and sea creatures. We learned how to ask questions and use the questions to help us read an identification key. We learned the names of shells and the creatures from A House For Hermit Crab.

Wayne County Fair Week

The students in room 111 were so excited about the fair. They wrote about all their adventures in their writing journals. It's always fun to hear what their favorite parts are. My family and I decided Wednesday would be our fair day. Even though it was about 90 degrees at 8pm, we braved the heat to get our favorite treats. I headed to the 'Cheese on a Stick' wagon as soon as we got there. After I enjoyed my treat, I made my way to the school building so I could see my students' art work. I was so proud of their awesome projects. We made our way through lots of buildings, won some fish and ate some good food, but by far, the school building was my favorite.

Our little home away from home!
